In Changchun specifically
- In Changchun, QR payment is accepted at essentially every shop, restaurant and metro gate; bring only enough cash for the first day.
- Changchun has a metro, and you can scan the Alipay/WeChat transit QR directly at the gate — no separate metro card needed.
- Changchun street markets and temple stalls are the main places still preferring cash — keep small notes.
What everyone needs to know
- Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept Visa and Mastercard directly — you do not need a Chinese bank account.
- Transactions under ¥200 usually carry no fee; above ¥200 a foreign-card fee of around 3% applies.
- Cash is still legal tender and useful for small vendors, temple donations and rural buses, but many stalls genuinely cannot give change.
- Most foreign cards cannot be used for person-to-person transfers, so you cannot top up a friend.
The numbers
| Item | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Alipay foreign-card fee | 0% under ¥200, ≈3% above |
| Typical spend coverage | >95% of daily purchases via QR |
| ATM withdrawal | ¥3,000–5,000 per day, home-bank fee applies |
| Setup time | 5–10 minutes with passport and card |
Do it in this order
- Install Alipay (or WeChat) before you fly and complete identity verification with your passport.
- Add your Visa/Mastercard under Me → Bank Cards. A small test charge verifies the card.
- Set the app language to English and enable the QR code on your home screen.
- Keep a physical card and ¥500–1,000 in cash as a fallback for the first day.
Mistakes that cost money or time
- Waiting until you land to install the app — verification sometimes needs SMS to your home number.
- Assuming a declined first charge means the card will never work; banks often block the first foreign charge and need an in-app approval.
- Relying entirely on a phone that may run out of battery — carry a power bank.

Questions people actually ask
- Which is better, Alipay or WeChat Pay?
- Alipay has the smoother foreign-card onboarding and clearer English UI. WeChat Pay is worth having as a backup because a few small vendors only take WeChat.
- Can I use Apple Pay or Google Pay?
- Not directly at most merchants. You can sometimes add a foreign card to Alipay and pay from the phone, but the QR flow is the norm.
