Do it in this order

  1. Screenshot your hotel name and address in Chinese — it is the single most useful safety tool.
  2. Register your trip with your own embassy and save its local number.
  3. Walk with the traffic flow mentally: e-bikes come from both directions on one-way streets.
  4. Decline unsolicited invitations to "tea ceremonies" or "art student exhibitions" — the classic bill-shock scam.

Questions people actually ask

Is it safe for a solo female traveller?
Reported harassment rates are far lower than in most Western cities and night-time public transport is well used. Normal precautions still apply in dense markets and late-night entertainment districts.
Can I drink the tap water?
No. Drink bottled or boiled water. Hotel kettles are standard in every room.
