Do it in this order

  1. Learn to say 你好 and 谢谢 — even badly, it changes how you are received.
  2. In temples, walk clockwise and keep voices down.
  3. At a dinner, wait for the host to start and leave the last piece on a shared plate.
  4. When offered tea, tap two fingers on the table to acknowledge — the local equivalent of "thank you".

Questions people actually ask

Should I learn Mandarin or the local dialect?
Mandarin is understood everywhere. Local dialects (Cantonese, Shanghainese) are relevant socially but not linguistically necessary.
Is gift-giving expected?
Not in ordinary tourist interactions. Business gifts are common and are usually exchanged with both hands.
