The numbers

Taxi tippingNot expected — round up at most
Hotel porterageNot expected, but ¥10 is never refused
Guide gratuityGenuinely appreciated, ¥50–100/day

Do it in this order

  1. Pay exactly the bill; leave the change if you want but do not feel obliged.
  2. For private guides and drivers, a discretionary gratuity is welcomed.
  3. Do not tip in a way that singles out staff in front of others.
  4. Check whether a service fee is already on the bill — it usually is not.
