The best time to visit China, month by month
China spans tropical Hainan to the Siberian border. “Best time” is a city question, not a country question — but two holiday windows matter everywhere.
The two comfortable windows两个舒适季
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons across most of China: mild days, lower humidity and reliable walking weather. The trade-off is that everyone knows this, so prices and crowds rise accordingly.
Summer is hot and wet in the south and centre, and hot but drier in the north. Winter is harsh in the northeast, mild in the far south — and the reason to visit both Harbin and Sanya in the same month.
| Region | Best months | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| North (Beijing, Xi’an, Shanxi) | April–May, September–October | July heat, January cold |
| East coast (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou) | March–May, October–November | July–August humidity |
| Southwest (Chengdu, Chongqing, Guilin) | March–May, September–October | July–August heat and rain |
| Yunnan and high ground | March–May, September–November | June–August rains |
| Northeast (Harbin) | January–February, July–August | Mud season in March–April |
| Tropical south (Sanya, Hainan) | November–April | May–October heat and typhoons |
Month by month, where to go逐月推荐
Use this as a starting point, then check the city page for its specific monthly range. A month that is perfect in Beijing can be miserable in Guangzhou.
- January: Harbin’s ice festival and Sanya’s beaches. The country’s biggest temperature split.
- February: Spring Festival dates move yearly. Expect the busiest transport week of the year.
- March: low-season prices in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou as the first warm days arrive.
- April: the most reliable spring weather nationwide, especially Beijing, Xi’an and Luoyang.
- May: excellent almost everywhere, but 1–5 May is a domestic travel peak.
- June: go high (Yunnan, Guizhou) or north; southern lowlands turn humid.
- July: hot nationwide; the northwest and northern mountains are the best of a hot month.
- August: peak domestic holiday. Book hotels and trains early, especially in Zhangjiajie and Guilin.
- September: the single most comfortable month for most of the country.
- October: avoid 1–7 October; from the second week it is superb almost everywhere.
- November: shoulder season in the south — Guangzhou, Xiamen and Sanya — with low prices.
- December: Harbin for ice, Sanya for warmth, and the rest of the country for museums and hot pot.
The two windows to avoid两个要避开的假期
Golden Week (1–7 October) and the Spring Festival travel period are the two moments when transport fills and hotel prices can triple. They are not impossible to travel in, but they require booking weeks ahead and accepting crowds at every headline attraction.
May Day (1–5 May) is a smaller version of the same problem. If your dates are fixed, book rail tickets the moment the 15-day window opens and choose cities that are not on the domestic top-ten list.
What the weather actually feels like体感温度
Northern winters are dry and intensely heated indoors. A heavy coat that is right for the street becomes unbearable in a mall or metro carriage, so layers beat one thick jacket. Southern summers are humid enough that quick-dry fabric matters more than light fabric.
Mountain weather is its own category. Zhangjiajie, Huangshan and Mount Hua can be clear at the base and inside a cloud at the top; build in a weather day rather than treating the summit as guaranteed.
| Season | North | South |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Light layers, windproof shell | T-shirt plus a rain layer |
| Summer | Sun hat, quick-dry shirt | Quick-dry, umbrella, mosquito repellent |
| Autumn | Fleece and a light coat | T-shirt with an evening layer |
| Winter | Thermal base, down, hat, gloves, grip shoes | Light jacket; Sanya is beach weather |
Questions people ask
- What is the cheapest month to visit China?
- November and March usually combine the lowest hotel prices with tolerable weather. Avoid the weeks around Golden Week and Spring Festival, when prices spike.
- When is Golden Week in China?
- Golden Week is 1–7 October every year. It is the busiest domestic travel period after Spring Festival, and hotel and transport prices rise sharply.
- Is winter a good time to visit China?
- For Harbin’s ice festival, yes — it is the point of the trip. For general sightseeing in the north, the cold limits outdoor time. The south, including Sanya and Xiamen, is mild and pleasant.
- When is the rainy season in China?
- Roughly May–September in the south, with the heaviest period in June–August. The north is drier, though July thunderstorms are common.
