The plan

One headline sight a day, with the evening left for food. Crossing a Chinese city takes longer than the map suggests; this plan does not pretend otherwise.

  1. Day 1

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

    Eat: Mapo tofu

  2. Day 2

    People’s Park teahouse

    Eat: Hotpot (mala)

  3. Day 3

    Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Street

    Eat: Dan dan noodles

Where to stay

Stay within a 10-minute walk of a metro station inside the inner ring. Chengdu has a metro, so most journeys cost ¥2–10 and avoid traffic.

Getting there

Chongqing 1h15, Xi’an 3h, Leshan 1h — a Chengdu–Chongqing twin-city trip is the standard southwest route.

The main airport is Shuangliu (CTU) / Tianfu (TFU).

When to go

The most comfortable months are March, April, May, September, October. Avoid Golden Week (1–7 October) and the Spring Festival travel period.
