Nightlife & evenings in China
What actually happens after dark, from night markets to live houses.
What everyone needs to know
- Night markets are the default evening activity and close around 23:00.
- Bars and clubs cluster in specific districts; the scene varies enormously by city.
- Metro services stop around 23:00, so plan the return before you go out.
- Late-night safety is good, but unlicensed venues and drink-spiking scams exist in tourist districts.
The numbers
| Item | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Night market hours | 17:00–23:00 |
| Cocktail bar | ¥70–150 |
| Beer at a stall | ¥10–25 |
| Last metro | ≈22:30–23:30 |
Do it in this order
- Start at a night market for food, then move to a bar district.
- Check the last metro time before leaving your hotel.
- Use DiDi for the return; it is cheap and avoids unlicensed cabs.
- Stick to venues with visible prices and a local crowd.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the metro runs as late as in your home city.
- Following a stranger to a "great bar" — the classic bill-shock setup.
- Turning up to a club before 22:00, when most are still empty.
